Program

FrOSCon offers at both conference days a comprehensive lecture program in 5 rooms. Additionally lectures and workshops are offered by several Open Source Projects in their own project rooms. Next to this, the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) and the TYPO3 Association perform exams to part wise discounted conditions. Highlight of FrOSCon 2010 will be the new program for kids and youth which is this year for the first time a part of the FrOSCon. Of course there also will be a social event on saturday evening to celebrate the fifth FrOSCon.

As main focuses for this year have been selected:

  • NoSQL - Alternativ Databasesystems
  • Tinkering - Open Hardware, Fabrication and Hacking

Parallel to the lectures an OpenSQL Camp is taking place as subconference. The actual program can be found at programm.froscon.org.

Kids and Youth Track

This year the FrOSCon offers for the first time an extra program for kids and youngsters in the age of 10-14 and 15-18. The workshops and talks will take place on Saturday and Sunday between 9:30am and 5pm. An overview of the workshops can be found below, the concrete program here (keyword "Kids")

  • OpenStreetMap Workshop with digital scavenger hunt (Geocaching)*
    In contrast to GoogleMaps and co, the OpenStreetMaps Team offers their geo data for free in the internet and you cannot only use this data, you can also contribute to it! Is your home street not on the map? Or is your favourite ice-cream parlor missing? Just add it on your own. In this workshop you learn how to do it and already collect your first data during a fun scavenger hunt around the area of the FrOSCon. There exist no requirements in knowledge.
  • Programming of LegoMindstorms Roboters**
    Have you ever programmed a real roboter? No? Then join this workshop and program your own little Lego-roboter. Therefore a graphical programming framework is used which allows you to let the roboter solve small tasks, like drawing a picture, following a line or dancing to music. You will work in teams of 2 or 3, prerequisites do not exist. The workshop is supported by the University of applied science Bonn Rhein Sieg, master course MAS, which provides the roboters and futher assistance.
  • Webdesign for curious kids
    At this workshop you will create your own website. Thereby you will lern the basics of the languages html and css, which are used to write websites. Also you will learn how professionals approach such a task.
    What you need to join:
    • generell PC experience (Working with mouse and keyboard, creating files)
    • expreience with surfing the web
    • enough experience with the keyboard to type fast enough
    • desire to make your hands dirty during the workshop by doing stuff on your own :-)
  • Stop-Motion Animation Workshop**
    Taste the magic of animation! This workshop will introduce you to the technique of stop-motion animation, with the help of a video-camera and a free computer. Photo by photo, frame by frame we will build a short movie about frogs to enter the Creative Contest.
    No prerequisite nor equipment is requested. The workshop will be held in English but creativity overcomes any language barrier. Furthermore there will be a German and English speaking person just in case.
  • Game-programming with Python
    Horst JENS (Company www.spielend-programmieren.at) will offer a two-part workshop for teenagers and young stayed adults. In the first part an introduction into the Open-Source programming language Python (www.python.org) will be given, which is also appropriate for beginners. Target of the course is the creation of a very simple graphic adventure.
    In the second part an introduction into the 2D game development is given, with the assistance of the SDL-Python-Linkage pygame (www.pygame.org) and the wiki (ThePythonGameBook.com), which is powered by Horst Jens. Target of the course is to create a 2D computer game with Python and Pygame.

Due to the limited capacity of some workshops you should register yourself in advance. This does not only bring advantage for us, but also for you, because when we realize that a workshop is completely booked in advance, we can try to offer it a second time. But the biggest advantage for you is that for registered participants the entrance is free! The registration is available at kids.froscon.de. Of course you can also join a workshop on short notice at FrOSCon, but we cannot guarantee that there will be any free spaces left.

For every participant an legal guardian has to send in a statement of agreement, so that you are allowed to move on your own on the area of FrOSCon. This document is send to you during the registration process.

LPI examinations at the FrOSCon 2010

Since the first FrOSCon, LPI-examinations have taken place during the conference. At the FrOSCon 2010 the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) also offers all of its available examinations:

  • LPIC-1 and LPIC-2 (101, 102, 201, 202) – in German and in English,
  • LPIC-3 (301, 302, 303) – in English,
  • Univention Certified Professional Examination (LPI 198) – in German.

Visitors of the FrOSCon 2010 pay 75 EUR for any LPIC-1 and LPIC-2 examination as well as for the examinations 302 and 303. For examination 301, a fee of 95 EUR will be charged.

For the first time ever the new LPI exam 304 about Virtualization and High Availability will be offered in paper form at an event. You can find more information about the contents of LPI 304 at http://wiki.lpi.org/wiki/LPIC-304. The new exam LPI 304 is being offered in english for a fee of 75 Euro.

The participation fees for all offers must be paid in cash before the examination. Participants must produce valid photo identification and a valid LPI-Identification number. The LPI-identification number must be applied for under following URL: http://www.lpi.org/caf/Xamman/register

The examinations will take place on Saturday, August 21nd at 10:00 and 15:00 o’clock.

Attention: The number of examination-seats is limited and advance reservation is recommended. The examination room will be signposted. Meeting point for all participants will be 15 minutes prior to examination begin in the examination room.

TYPO3 Certification

TYPO3 has developed itself to one of the leading Content Management Systems, whereby the complexity as well as the range of possibilities has been strongly increased over the years. A certificate over their knowledge enables TYPO3-Professionals to withdraw themselves from the concurrence in front of their customers.

The exam is taking place on the 22.08.2010 from 10:00-12:00h at FrOSCon. An examiner of the TYPO3 certification team will perform the exam. The registration has to be made directly over the certification webside certification.typo3.org.
